Even if it is an emergency, you must remember to secure your forklift from movement before getting off – this means applying the park brake and putting the controls in neutral, otherwise here is an example of what can happen:
“Two men were taken to the hospital to be treated for leg and hip injuries after a piece of granite fell onto one worker and another was injured when he jumped out of a forklift to help his co-worker. One of the men was attempting to move a piece of granite onto a forklift, while the other man handled the vehicle but the granite appeared to be too heavy for the first man, and fell on him. Seeing his co-worker in distress, the forklift driver jumped out of the vehicle but forgot to put the forklift in neutral, causing the forklift to roll into both men.”
