Scissor lift accident – who pays the price?

An Ontario construction company and two supervisors were fined a total of $133,000 last week in an accident that caused the death of one worker and serious injury to another.

Basically the scissor lift the workers were using to insulate overhead water pipes in a bus garage was knocked over by an overhead door when it was triggered to open.

Sloppy supervision, a lock-out procedure that was not followed correctly, and a door that was intermittently not working all contributed to this avoidable accident.

The construction company paid the price in a $125,000 fine.  The two supervisors paid the price, they were fined $4,000 each.  But ultimately it was the workers who paid the price – one with his life and one with serious injuries.
