We were recently training at a large facility with not many forklifts but lots of workers on foot. It still amazes me how some people are oblivious to the dangers of working near forklifts. While it would seem obvious that the pedestrian is always going to come off worse if there is any contact with a forklift, many people still don’t seem to get it. So here’s the deal: look, listen and wait for instructions when you see a forklift. A good operator will tell you what to do – stop or go. It’s not complicated and it could save your life, or leg, or arm, or some other body part.
Companies would be well advised to provide some education to workers around forklifts. Try showing “Fields of Vision” at your next safety meeting, available here in our list of multimedia resources.
