Forklifts work in tight spaces and for new operators the steering is one of the most fundamental concepts you must grasp first.
Forklifts steer from the rear and turn really tight, but look out for that backswing that sends the back of the forklift in the opposite direction to the turn. Checking clearances before turning is crucial for safe operation.
In our programs we often start novices off with simple cone exercises to practice steering. Round and round one cone, then in reverse, then navigating a slalom between cones. It is an effective way to learn where to steer and how tight to steer.
