Safe operation of a forklift is not just about knowing the controls and how to handle a load, it is also about the operating environment. This means knowing the layout of your warehouse, where the hot spots are (for example loading docks, entrances from offices, congested areas) and operating accordingly. We always talk about “Workplace specific safety concerns” in our training courses to identify any special hazards operators may encounter. This is something an employer should cover during orientation for new employees whether or not they operate a forklift, and it is a very good reason why forklift training is best delivered on site in the workplace.
