Crushing injuries on stand-up forklifts are common but completely avoidable.
When using a reach truck or stand-up counterbalanced (also known as a dockstocker) always make sure you keep your feet, especially heels, within the operator’s area. If you back up close to a wall, rack or other hard object you have no protection outside that area and the first thing that will get crushed will be you.
Bear in mind the weight of the forklift and you realize that even at a very slow speed you will be seriously injured. Our bodies are soft and squashy but the forklift is hard, solid metal.
Always being aware of your clearances and looking behind before backing up will also help to prevent such injuries.
