What information do you need to book a course?

Just call us on 604-839-6517.  We will ask for specific details of your operation – what type of forklifts are you using, how much (if any) previous experience do the trainees have, do they have any learning issues (e.g. language ability), have you had any forklift accidents or near misses.  The more information you provide the more we can ensure our program meets your needs.

How long does it take?

The amount of time taken varies depending on class size, learning pace and previous experience.  On average a class of 5 operators need 4 hours to complete the theory.  The practical training and evaluation takes place one on one with time taken as needed to ensure safe operation.

We strive to make our classes interesting, using forklift models and other visual training aids.  They are also highly interactive since an interested and engaged pupil always learns more effectively.  Many of our adult trainees have not sat in a classroom or taken a test since their schooldays and we do take this into account in our training methods.  We ask questions throughout the course to ensure that concepts have been fully understood.

What is the minimum class size?

One.

How much does it cost?

Our competitive prices are based on equipment type, class size and location.  For a company specific quote, please contact us by calling 604-839-6517, or emailing: info@martinsforklift.com

My employees already know how to operate a forklift, why must they do the course?

Work Safe BC stipulates operators must receive theory and practical training.  This means that even an experienced operator needs to take the full course.  Sadly, statistics show that mature, experienced operators are just as likely to have an accident as new, young inexperienced workers.

Why can’t my employees come to your school?

Regulations stipulate that training should be site and equipment specific.  If you send your employees to a school to learn how to drive a forklift, they will not be learning how to operate your equipment in your environment.  While they may be able to operate a forklift in a parking lot or simulated workplace, they may not be able to cope with the real challenges of a busy manufacturing or distribution warehouse.

We spend quite a lot of time on workplace specific safety concerns in our courses, identifying potential hazards, recommending ways to lessen the danger in high traffic areas and familiarizing operators with the controls and special operating conditions of their own equipment.

For this reason we only offer on site training.

What are your training times?

We schedule all programs to accommodate your times, whether employees are on different shifts, work weekends, start early, start late or work nights.

We don’t have a training room or board room – what equipment is required?

We conduct our courses in all types of rooms – lunchrooms, offices large and small, or just a quiet corner of the warehouse, and we bring all the equipment required – workbooks, audio visual equipment and training aids.  All we ask is that the area you allocate to us is quiet enough for the trainees to concentrate, listen and learn undisturbed by other employees

What about the practical part?

We will ask that you allocate us a large enough area to practice driving, manoeuvring and “real work” and that your forklift has sufficient fuel (propane or fully charged battery) to last the course.  Whenever possible, we will get trainees to carry out tasks they would normally have to be able to do on the job.

What are the benefits of outsourcing training?

Training is our business, it is what we do.  Our courses are fully compliant with the relevant standards and always professionally delivered.  Your employees will benefit from a neutral, external instructor who takes pride in their work.

What if an employee cannot pass the course?

Some employees find the classroom theory challenging, while others may find the equipment and practical training intimidating.  As certified instructors, we are accustomed to pacing our courses to the ability of the trainees.  Having said that we cannot guarantee a pass and if we find a would-be operator who is just not destined to operate a forklift, we will say so.  We take safety very seriously and treat all our customers’ facilities as if they were our own – meaning if we would not want an individual driving a forklift in our warehouse we won’t certify them to drive in yours.

Nonetheless, we do spend extra time with trainees who are nervous, need more personal attention or have difficulties with any particular aspect of the program.

We don’t have the time for our operators to sit in a classroom, how quickly can you train them?

This is one of the saddest excuses we hear for non-compliance with the training requirements.  Time may be money but an accident will cost you a lot more in both time and money.  Negligent employers who do not comply may face heavy fines or even business closure.  Coupled with the distress of a fatal or disabling accident, such an incident can cripple a business.

We will not and cannot rush the training.  Employees can take frequent breaks and we can work around your schedule but we do not take short cuts.

What about the documentation?

Your company receives all the necessary documentation upon course completion and we keep copies of all the evaluations we conduct.  For any operator we train our program management system allows us to track the date when they are due for recertification and remind you a month before.

How do we pay?

We invoice your company upon completion and our terms are invoice payable on receipt.

Why choose us?

We are professional, experienced instructors.  We come to you and we make the training relevant.  We have successfully trained operators in all kinds of environments on all types of equipment.  We are passionate about safety and we convey this to all our trainees.  Our courses are never boring.  We are also competitively priced and very flexible.

And a question we will ask you - why are you sending your employees to be trained?

We hope you will always answer because we want to run a safe operation rather than “because it’s the law”.  A trained operator will be an asset to your organization, an untrained operator can be a liability.
